Description

What Is Ultra Glass Filter Media?

The Ultra glass filter media is a high‑tech filtration media made from virgin plate glass, not recycled bottle glass. Because of its unique design and electrostatic properties, it provides superior filtration compared to regular silica sand. The 20 kg bag comes in two grades: 0.597–1.4 mm and 1.4–2 mm particle size.

Technical Specifications

  • Material: Virgin plate-glass (no bottle glass).
  • Particle Sizes / Grades:
    • Fine: 0.597–1.4 mm
    • Coarse: 1.4–2 mm
  • Surface Charge: Slightly negative charge, which helps attract and hold particles.
  • pH (Media): Around 9.5–10 for the 1.4–2 mm grade.
  • Specific Gravity: ~1.31 for 1.4–2 mm grade.
  • Melting / Softening Point: > 800 °C (very stable).
  • Solubility in Water: Insoluble — it will not dissolve into your treated water.
  • Durability: Highly resistant to abrasion and does not splinter during backwash.
  • Life-Span: Ultra glass media can last many years — significantly longer than typical sand.
  • Eco Profile: 100% recyclable, made from virgin glass.

How It Works

  1. Filtration Efficiency: The glass grains carry a negative charge, which helps attract and trap fine particles—including suspended solids, microplastics, and some metals.
  2. Backwash Savings: Because of its particle shape and charge, the media requires shorter backwash cycles, which saves water.
  3. Self-Sterilizing Surface: The media can generate very small amounts of free radicals (O⁻ and HO⁻) on its surface, helping resist bacterial growth.
  4. Long Service Life: Unlike silica sand, glass media does not break down easily and maintains structural integrity over many cycles.

Benefits

  • Reduced Backwash Water Usage: Thanks to its efficient design, you’ll likely backwash less often and for shorter durations.
  • Better Filtration: Captures finer particles and contaminants more effectively due to its electrostatic surface.
  • Durable & Long-Lasting: Resists physical breakdown and can last for many years, reducing media replacement costs.
  • Healthy Operation: Negative surface charge and free radical activity help minimize biofilm development.
  • Eco-Friendly: The media is 100% recyclable and made from virgin glass, making it a greener alternative.
  • Lower Energy / Chemical Costs: Less frequent backwash cycles and more efficient filtration can reduce both energy and chemical demand.

Ideal Applications

  • Replacement for silica sand filters in water-treatment systems.
  • Municipal or industrial filters treating surface water, groundwater, or process water.
  • Pool filtration systems where long media life and water savings are important.
  • Aquaculture or aquarium systems requiring efficient removal of fine particles and metals.
  • Any system that values eco-friendly, recyclable media.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Initial Backwash: Always backwash the media thoroughly after loading to settle the bed and clear fines.
  • Backwash Cycles: Use the manufacturer’s recommended backwash frequency — likely less often than with sand.
  • Bed Depth: Maintain the correct bed depth in your filter vessel to ensure optimal filtration contact.
  • Reuse: Glass media is durable — you can recover and reuse it after system rebuilds if handled carefully.
  • Dispose Responsibly: Because it’s recyclable, you can recycle the glass when replacing the media.
